In South-West of Montreal, Saint-Henri has become a hotbed of trendy and exceptional dining options and this can most certainly be attributed to a delicious little eatery called Tuck Shop, which spearheaded the movement back in 2010.
Tuck Shop Montreal serves up a mix of French bistro and internationally-inspired cuisine while highlighting seasonal ingredients from the nearby Atwater Market. Located on Notre Dame Street, the restaurant has a rather unassuming facade with their Tuck Shop signage mimicking something you would find in an old, rural town. However, on the inside the restaurant lights up with votive candles and yellow neon chairs wrapping around the bar.
Upon arrival you will be greeted by Jon Metcalfe, maître d’hôtel extraordinaire, who’s charming personality sets the tone for this small and chic establishment. There is always great music playing in the background and the restaurant buzzes with happy locals who come here time-and-time again for a great dining experience. Tuck Shop has an excellent and reasonably priced wine list, but if you’re feeling thirsty I would also recommend starting (and finishing) your evening with one of their very gratifying homemade cocktails.
Tuck Shop’s changing menu boasts diverse starters such as a beef tartar served with remoulade, crostini and porcini aioli, or a crispy pork belly atop an aged gouda and oyster mushroom combination. Heavenly.
For mains, they’ve got everything from Mediterranean bass and Gaspesie halibut to a classic steak frites with chimichurri sauce. Desserts aren’t to be forgotten and if you’re lucky you can enjoy one of Chef/Owner Theo Lerikos’ mother’s outrageously delicious homemade pies. Aww.
Service is discreet, professional and on-point, and depending on where you’re sitting you could very well get to chat with the ever-cool owners. The restaurant has different seating stations and if you’re looking for a little action you can either grab front row stool at the kitchen bar and watch Chef Lerikos do his thing, or you can sit at the main bar and be wooed by Jon Bloom or Amelia Stines impeccable taste in wines and cocktails.
There are lots of new and great restaurants in Saint-Henri, but if you’re looking for somewhere amazing to eat and have not yet had the chance to dine at Tuck Shop – you gotta go! Every course will be seriously yummy and you will probably daydream about them for weeks to come. I write from experience.
